Happy Thursday! Welcome to this week’s Let’s Learn a New Crochet Stitch – Kitchen Crochet Edition event. This week I am going to show you the Spiked Box Stitch in this photo tutorial.  I am also going to give you instructions for a dishcloth in a  6″ x 6″, 9″ x 9″ and 12″ x 12″ size. Spiked Box Stitch Tutorial and Dishcloth Pattern

Materials:

Abbreviations:

ch(s) – chain(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
hdc2tog – half double crochet two stitches together
dc – double crochet
t-ch – turning chain
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Multiple:

Odd number of stitches

Gauge:

3.2 sts & 2 rows = 1″

Finished Sizes:

6″ x 6″
9″ x 9″
12″ x 12″

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  • The sizes are an approximation. They will not be exact. Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. Gauge is not necessary for this pattern but if you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • Written instructions for both sizes are listed below, after the photo tutorial.

Photo Tutorial:

Ch 23

Row 1:  Start working a hdc2tog by yarning over and inserting the hook in the 4th ch from hook, pull up a loop

Row 1 cont’d: yarn over and insert hook in the next ch, pull up a loop3

 Row 1 cont’d: yarn over and pull through all loops on hook (hdc2tog made)

Row 1 cont’d: *1 dc in the same ch as the last st

Row 1 cont’d: hdc2tog over the next 2 chs**

 Row 1 cont’d: Repeat from * to ** across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3

Row 2 cont’d: hdc2tog over the first and second sts (the hdc2tog and dc from previous row)

Row 2 cont’d: Begin working a Spike dc by working a dc between the hdc2tog and dc from previous row.

Row 2 cont’d: Repeat from * to ** working last hdc2tog into the next st and t-ch, turn.

Row 3: Ch 316

Row 3 cont’d: hdc2tog over the first and second sts (hdc2tog and dc from Row 2)

Row 3 cont’d: *Work 1 Spike dc in the sp between the hdc2tog and dc from previous row

Row 3 cont’d: hdc2tog over the next 2 sts**

Row 3 cont’d: Repeat from * to ** across, working last hdc2tog in the last st and t-ch, turn.

Row 4-12: Repeat Row 3, fasten off and weave ends.

Ch 23
Row 1: hdc2tog in the 4th and 5th ch from hook, *1 dc in the same st, hdc2tog over the next 2 sts** Repeat from * to ** across, turn. (19)
Row 2: Ch 3, hdc2tog over the first and second st, *1 Spike dc (see tutorial above), hdc2tog over the next 2 sts** Repeat from * to ** across working the last hdc2tog in the last st and t-ch, turn.  (19)
Row 3: Ch 3, hdc2tog over the first and second st, *1 Spike dc (see tutorial above), hdc2tog over the next 2 sts** Repeat from * to ** across working the last hdc2tog in the last st and t-ch, turn.  (19)
Row 4-12: Repeat Row 3. Fasten off, weave ends.

Finish (optional):

You can add a simple border by joining your yarn with a sl st in one of the stitches, sc evenly around placing 3 sc sts in each corner, join in beginning sc with an invisible join. Fasten off, weave ends.

9″ Dishcloth

Ch 29
Row 1: hdc2tog in the 4th and 5th ch from hook, *1 dc in the same st, hdc2tog over the next 2 sts** Repeat from * to ** across, turn. (25)
Row 2: Ch 3, hdc2tog over the first and second st, *1 Spike dc (see tutorial above), hdc2tog over the next 2 sts** Repeat from * to ** across working the last hdc2tog in the last st and t-ch, turn.  (25)
Row 3: Ch 3, hdc2tog over the first and second st, *1 Spike dc (see tutorial above), hdc2tog over the next 2 sts** Repeat from * to ** across working the last hdc2tog in the last st and t-ch, turn.  (25)
Row 4-17: Repeat Row 3. Fasten off, weave ends.
