Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • All stitches are worked through both loops unless otherwise noted.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. Gauge is not necessary for this pattern but if you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • Parts of this pattern are worked in a continuous round. This is where the stitch marker comes in handy. Move the stitch marker along at the end of every round to keep your place.
  • This pattern utilizes a pom pom maker. If you do not have a pom pom maker or do not feel comfortable using a pom pom, you can see how to make a small crochet ball here, for the top of the hat.
  • This pattern also utilizes safety eyes. If you do not feel comfortable using safety eyes, you can embroider the eyes onto the face with yarn or embroidery floss.

Finish:

  • Fasten off, weave ends.
  • Create a small pom pom using your pom pom maker. Use the tail end of the pom pom to sew it onto the top of the hat. Alternatively, you can crochet a small ball to attach to the top if you are not comfortable with making a pom pom or do not have a pom pom maker. You can see how to make the ball here.
  • Assembly:

Start by finishing off the scarf. Cut 6 strands of Color B to about 4″ in length. Fold the strands in half. Using a small hook, pull the strands half way through one end of the scarf. Pull the strands through the loop and pull on the strands to tighten. Repeat with the other side and set the scarf aside.

Now start to assemble the face. Place the beak on the face so that it is centered and close to the top but not too close. Using the tail end and yarn needle, sew the beak onto the face.

assmbl3

Start stuffing the body with fiber fill. Don’t over-stuff just yet. We just want it to take some shape so that we can sew the face and extremities on.

assmbl4

Position the face onto the body. Decide where you want it to go and make sure it is even and centered. Use pins to secure the face onto the body so that it does not move when you are sew it on. Using the tail end of the face and yarn needle, sew the face onto the body.

assmbl5assmbl6

Next we are going to attach the eyes. If you do not feel comfortable using safety eyes, you can always embroider the eyes using yarn or embroidery floss.

Position the safety eyes where you want them, so they look even and centered. Attach the backing of the safety eyes, making sure to not get any of the fiber fill stuck in between the inside of the body and the backing. (Don’t mind my ugly ring finger tan )

assmbl7

Now you are going to stuff the body with fiber fill until it is full and firm. If you think you have enough, add just a bit more. Fiber fill can flatten out over time so it’s better to over-stuff.

Now take the bottom circle that you made earlier and position it at the bottom of the body. It looks like it might not fit but don’t worry, it will once you start sewing it on. Using the tail end from the bottom and yarn needle, sew the bottom onto the body using a whip stitch (see tutorial above.)

assmbl8 assmbl9

To attach the wing, position the wing onto the side of the penguin body, with the WS facing out and tip of the triangle pointing towards the face. Sew the wing on with a whip stitch using the tail end of the wing and yarn needle. Repeat with the other side.

assmbl10 assmbl11

Position the first foot with the WS facing upwards (this photo angle shows the RS facing down.) Using the tail end of the foot and yarn needle, sew to body. Repeat with other side.

assmbl12

Now you can leave Stuffy just like this and he would be perfectly cute and cuddly. But, we want to dress him up for Christmas! Plus, we already made a hat and scarf for him. Let’s sew the hat on.

Position the hat slightly off center. Using the tail end of the hat and yarn needle, sew the hat on.

assmbl14

Wrap the scarf around your penguin and using the tail, stitch it together so that it doesn’t fall off.

And that’s it! You have the most adorable little penguin who is dressed up and ready for Christmas!
