Facial At Home

Have you ever been desperate for a facial but can’t get an appointment at your local spa? This was exactly my predicament. I’m the type of girl that tries not to pay full price for anything so naturally I look to my deal sites such as Groupon and Living Social to get deals on my spa and beauty services. I got a Groupon for a facial and massage for super cheap and got one for my best friend too. We tried to make an appointment on the weekends since she works full time. When I called up to make an appointment, the receptionist told me that they were completely booked until September. SEPTEMBER??? Really??? I was not about to wait until September to get a facial. I went back to Groupon and tried again. I found another day spa that had really great ratings so I decided to call before actually buying the voucher. The aesthetician told me that she was unavailable until the end of July. At this point, I thought that it was best to give up on even trying to find a place to get a facial. I knew that I was in desperate need of a facial since it’s been a while since I had one and my skin was absolutely disgusting. I decided that it was time to take matters into my own hands. I started looking up ways to give yourself a facial at home. After searching for a few different methods, I came across this 5 Step Facial by Lauren Conrad.   I gave it a try and afterwards, my face glowed and felt amazing!

I decided to make my own exfoliating sugar scrub and face mask. It’s super easy and you only need a few ingredients. And best of all, it’s all natural and good for your wallet.

Now that you have your exfoliating scrub and face mask, you can get started with your facial. Here is what you will need for the facial (adapted from Lauren’s post):
  • A good face cleanser (something gentle that you would use daily, preferably without an exfoliator)
  • Your exfoliating sugar scrub
  • A clean washcloth, I like a nice soft cotton washcloth
  • Your homemade banana face mask
  • Moisturizer (I use bareMinerals SPF 20 Moisturizer for Combination Skin)
  • 2 cucumber slices (for the spa feel)
Instructions (I adapted Lauren’s post to fit my own needs)
  • Cleanse your face using your cleanser.
  • Using the tips of your fingers, gently rub your homemade sugar scrub into your skin in a circular motion. Make sure to focus on your T-zone (forehead and nose). Scrub your neck as well. Rinse the scrub off of your face and neck.
  • Fill a medium sized bowl with very hot water. (Be careful not to burn yourself!) Soak the face towel in the hot water for a few seconds. Squeeze the excess water out and press it to your face. Repeat this 2 more times. (Make sure that the water is hot. If not, then change the water.)
  • Apply your homemade banana face mask to your face and neck. Place your cucumber slices on your eyes and sit back and relax for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes is up, remove your cucumbers and rinse your face and neck.
  • Apply your moisturizer to your face and neck. And that’s it. You’re all done!
A few tips:
  • When exfoliating, don’t scrub too hard or else your will irritate your skin.
  • When making your sugar scrub, don’t use a coarse ground sugar like turbinado sugar as it may damage your skin while you are scrubbing.
  • The banana mask is meant to help with oily skin. If you have dry skin, try one of these other homemade mask recipes.
You don’t have to spend a ton of money to pamper yourself. It’s great to get a professional facial on a somewhat regular basis, but this DIY Homemade Facial is great when you can’t make it to the spa. Enjoy!
