Crochet Penguin Hat Pattern – Newborn Size

On my local news station they have a segment called Free Friday where they show local deals for free items and services. What better way to celebrate Free Friday than to post a free pattern! This is the pattern for my Penguin Hat that I sell in my Etsy store. I wrote this pattern myself so if there are any mistakes please let me know and I will try to fix or clarify any issues. This pattern is for a newborn size only. I am working on writing up the pattern for the other sizes. Happy crocheting!

Braids:

  • For the braids, cut 9 strands of yarn for each side of the hat (18 strands in total) measuring approximately 30 inches (Note: You can make them longer or shorter depending on how long you would like your braids.)
  • Fold the strands in half and pull half of the strands through the earflap.
  • Make a knot to secure the braids to the earflap.
  • Braid the strands.
  • When you’ve reached the desired length of your braids, knot the bottom and trim the ends so that they are even.
  • Repeat for the other side.

Finish:

  • Center the beak onto the face piece. Using the long tail from the beak and a tapestry needle, sew the beak on to the face. I use sewing pins to keep the beak in place while I attach it.
  • Attach the button eyes or yarn eyes to face using a needle and thread or yarn tail and tapestry needle, respectively.
  • Center the face piece onto the hat. Using the long yarn tail from the face and a tapestry needle, sew the face onto the hat. I use pins for this as well to hold the face piece into place.
  • Using the long tail from the bow and a tapestry needle, sew the bow into place.
  • Weave all ends.
